Artist Statement

.

David Meanix began making photosculpture in 1995, creating and pioneering the new genre as an Interdisciplinary Arts major at San Francisco State University.  Well recognized as the work of Claire Fisher from HBO’s Six Feet Under, Meanix remains ecstatic for the commission from the groundbreaking show.  Regarding photosculpture, Meanix states it represents,  creative transcendence.  A healthy, mindful dismantling of self limitations, a letting go of anything holding us back necessary to create change and growth.

Celebratory proof that you can indeed tear yourself apart and hold yourself together, deconstruct and construct, simultaneously.  Likewise, Meanix’s most current multimedia exhibition, Face To Face, features the sculpted faces of 12 gay men worn in scenarios where they make the conscious decision to face each others perspectives on HIV.  Mindful of the mission of Impulse Group NYC, an affiliate of AIDS Healthcare Foundation, it sparks and continues vital conversations about how the MSM community confronts HIV stigma to help lesson a serious upswell of infections.  The show effectively intertwines personal interviews, sculpture, photography, video, poetry, and interactive performance art.

The genesis of photosculpture appeared as a need to break the fourth wall of photography and show how people are indubitably MULTIDIMENSIONAL, physical, mental and spiritual beings. Passionate dancers of all disciplines have always been Meanix’s muse of choice.  Photosculptures are about breaking convention and remaining flexible in order to flow and grow together.
