ARTIST: JAN ZIEGLER

The portrait.

Represents a reflection.

More often than not, the most interesting artist submissions to Balaclava-Q are by artists that stumble across this project and find a person/output-based connection within the strands of this queer art project. Each submission re-defines and informs my own personal view of contemporary queer art. Berlin-based artist Ziegler is one such artist.
Ziegler‘s submission to Balaclava-Q is a painting project, Ziegler states this more clearly than I: “By chance I have discovered your interesting website featuring a very special topic and I was surprised to discover in my own art works the repetitious element of obscuring male faces. Before discovering your website, I had not consciously been aware of the fact, that my paintings of male portraits are never trying to represent bare appearance or idealised beauty. Mostly they are blurred by layers of semi transparent paint, parts of the face might seem missing or destroyed, over-painted, hidden behind masks of…“… (trans-)… “lucent colors – “…sometimes they seem grotesque, often they have a mysterious and transcendental aura…” (2018).
.
I would argue that Ziegler’s paintings adhere to a(n) acknowledged flux. A coquettish “hello” to motivations based on gender and sexual preference: An art historical hat-tip to the the trans/luscent outcomes of queer painters before and present and – more importantly – yet to come.
.
Say whatever you want, but – People are more interesting when they have “secrets”: an unintentional “forced-cool”, by a system. Previously acknowledged by queer painters from Caravaggio(B. 15712- D.1610), to Hockney (B. 1937) and Jarman (B. 1942 – D. 1994), subversive and strategic in every way.  Ziegler’s paintings re-affirm the importance and banality of constantly “coming out” and ultimately ask: Will we always be there & not there?.
