Athens based artist George Kanis was one of the original queer contingent to join Balaclava.Q. It is with great pride that we present a transition/trans/transcendence moment in Kanis’s subject matter. While continuing his trademark love of the portrait and the moment, Kanis employs porn as punk as art.

SuicKanis says: “This project is called CITY LOVERS – ATHENS. It is focused on the Greek underground scene.  I had become somehow known to the scene through my abstract works in photography and painting and that had a bad influence on me, because the result was that I was surrounded by “wanna-be” culture vultures. I know this sounds like a bad critique, a sweeping generalisation and does not represent my belief, but there is no other way I can explain that context.  So I moved more and more towards pornography, porn as art, porn is art, art porn.  This enabled me to find my true contemporaries.
_R005536CITY LOVERS can be considered as an erotic and/or romantic project – that’s the simplest aesthetic that can be applied – albeit I do not like to adhere to fixed theories, labels and classifications, other works (not presented here) are a lot more hardcore.  I am passionate that the critique destroys art and the artist themselves, so anyone can label my work as they wish, but that is not important to me.  My vision and my statement remains the same all these years: I try to find the line where chaos and freedom can coexist in harmony. This is how I approach all experiments, nothing more nothing less.  I just do whatever makes me happy no matter what, and I would recommend we stop talking about art and just make it, I would recommend anyone do that now, no matter what their stage in life or level in art.”  To view CITY LOVERS – ATHENS (2017), see below.
