Artists Statement
My work is about challenging the conventionality that informs the construction of identity in an effort to subvert hegemonic beliefs and values. The anonymity of figures that binds the images shown by Balaclava.Q lends itself to this new self-reckoning in our era of virtual egoism. Without a face, one becomes detached from one’s personal identity and that unfamiliarity gives way to infinite permutations of who or what one can be.
.
Carter presents two bodies of work to Balaclava.Q: ‘The Grindr Cutouts’ (2016) and ‘Half Pixels’ (2015).

Really, really interesting work! I especially liked how you cut away parts of the figure to achieve the look of collage. It’s the absence of form that stimulates the imagination of the viewer and encourages him/her to participate in the artwork by filling in the empty space. Great job!
