Luca Gaetano Pira is a photographer currently based in Berlin with an addiction for traveling. His lively and sensual photography explores the fusion between the human presence with the pure wildness of nature. His models, male or female, are often depicted naked into dreamy landscapes to emphasize the ancestral connection we have with the environment which surrounds us.

His aim is to move the watcher’s mind while at the same time to harshly criticize through the composition of intimate and enchanting images with the brutality of human behaviour.

In his photographic research, social criticism and the big love for the natural world is always at the center. Elegant and athletic figures whirl or just simply lie down in enchanting places which also show his big passion in exploring new territories. A ravishing photography and a brilliant mind in constant motion.

In the last few years, he decided to combine his passion for photography with his political sentiment to achieve photographic projects in criticism of this sick society that relentlessly pollutes, destroys, controls and massacres.

The images below are selected bodies of work which resonate with Balaclava.Q’s artistic tactic of obscuring the face. Pira’s individual artworks are all untitled, however he makes individual series of these images and makes titled categories. Pira has respectively titled these categories: Nukpana, Khaos, Fleisch Macht Frei and Janas.

Nukpana

Never before have people been so infantalized, made so dependent on the machine for everything; as the earth rapidly approaches its extinction due to technology, our souls are shrunk and flattened by its pervasive rule. Any sense of wholeness and freedom can only return by the undoing of the massive division of labour at the heart of technological progress. This is the liberatory project in all its depth.

Khaos

Kaos, aims to create a sort of biocentric encyclopedia in which the human being, laid bare, is contextualized in the company of other Earthlings(inhabitants of the earth) and creates a natural balance in which everyone has the need and the desire to live free according to their natural instincts. biocentrism consists of a worldview that focuses on the concept of life, overcoming the mental barriers of our anthropocentric culture that deprives values to non-human creatures.

more
In the Western world is often encountered attitude of the latter type, where the human being is given a higher value than the other forms of life, which become resources to be exploited until exhaustion, with no distinction between objects, animals or plant. This is the way of modern science, which sees all of nature around us simply as something subservient to man, without realizing that the man is nothing but a form of life amongst other forms of life, a piece of nature and that as such it needs to be in a balanced relationship with all the rest.

Fleisch Macht Frei

more

In the midst of our high-tech, ostentatious, hedonistic lifestyle, among the dazzling monuments to history, art, religion, and commerce, there are the ‘black boxes.’ These are the biomedical research laboratories, factory farms, and slaughterhouses – faceless compounds where society conducts its dirty business of abusing and killing innocent, feeling beings.

more
These are our Dachaus, our Buchenwalds, our Birkenaus. Like the good German burghers, we have a fair idea of what goes on there, but we don’t want any reality checks. We rationalize that the killing has to be done and that it’s done humanely. We fear that the truth would offend our sensibilities and perhaps force us to do something. It may even change our life.
